Yesterday, one hell of a game went down. Marcus using Khador with Strakhov against the mighty Gnarlhorn Plod with Circle and Mohsar. Both forces had two heavies, lots of highly dangerous units. This was Marcus' first game with the hyper dangerous Strakov and Gnarlhorn's first game fighting against him. The game was at 50 points with the Assassination victory condition. Shit was gonna REAL!
Marcus' List:Steak vs Gnarlhorn
Type: Skirmish (1 caster, 50pts)
Points: 50
Kommander Strakhov (*6pts)
* Beast-09 (11pts)
* Spriggan (10pts)
* War dog (1pts)
Great Bears of Gallowswood (5pts)
Greylord Ternion (Leader and 2 Grunts) (4pts)
Kayazy Assassins (Leader and 9 Grunts) (8pts)
* Kayazy Assassin Underboss (2pts)
Man-o-war Demolition Corps (Leader and 2 Grunts) (6pts)
Koldun Lord (2pts)
Man-o-war Drakhun (with dismount) (5pts)
Manhunter (2pts)
Due to an unfortunate quibble in Marcus' phone dictionary, Strakhov becomes Steak. It's just weird, but oddly appropriate. As you can see Strakhov had all the cool dudes ready to play. Beast-09 with his Reach and Thresher, the goddamn Spriggan whose Bulldoze would come in handy for clearing charge lanes, Great Bears for hard target killing, Kayazy Assassins to run around knobbing enemy infantry models, Demolition Corps to provide a dual role of defensive line and charge threats on feat turn, Koldun Lord to provide that one extra focus to ease up Strakhov's expensive spell list, Drakhun and Wardog to countercharge shit and a Manhunter. It's a bleeding edge list, that's made to do one thing and one thing really well. Assassination from crazy distances away. A real shit kicker.
Gnarlhorn's List:Mohsar's Anal Conundrum
Type: Skirmish (1 caster, 50pts)
Points: 50
Mohsar the Desertwalker (*5pts)
* Gorax (4pts)
* Feral Warpwolf (9pts)
* Pureblood Warpwolf (9pts)
Druids of Orboros (Leader and 5 Grunts) (7pts)
* Druid of Orboros Overseer (2pts)
Shifting Stones (2pts)
Tharn Bloodtrackers (Leader and 5 Grunts) (5pts)
Tharn Bloodweavers (Leader and 5 Grunts) (5pts)
Blackclad Wayfarer (2pts)
Blackclad Wayfarer (2pts)
Lord of the Feast (4pts)
Tharn Ravager White Mane (3pts)
War Wolf (1pts)
I never got to take the name of this list from Gnarlhorn so I gave it an appropriate moniker. Mohsar with Druids and Overseer would be a nightmare to deal with the ability to close down line of sight across a massive area, Feral and his Pureblood (Gnarlhorn's model is the Extreme Warpwolf, which is fucking massive and really cool looking) buddy would deal with hard targets and provide a highly mobile and dangerous tag team much like Animal and Hawk from the Legion of Doom, Shifting Stones would increase threat ranges and generally be annoying, two Blackclads to Hunter's Mark targets that need to die and teleport around the battlefield with ease, Bloodtrackers to prey light targets and provide a highly mobile skirmish assault force, Bloodweavers to kill off infantry with their crazy abilities, White mane to provide a highly dangerous solo that could go infantry hunting. The list also included a Warwolf for munching on light targets and the ever helpful Gorax, who's fat pig-like head would encourage the other beasts to more butchery. This list is also very fast, manoeuvrable but with the ability to lock down line of sight and kill targets.
Battlefield:
The battlefield was asymmetrical with what seemed like Castle Greyskull in one corner and some sort of wooded bunker on the other side. The central ground was littered with the occasional wall but otherwise creating an open killing field with forests on the edges to hide solos within. Again I return with my MSPaint drawings done during the late hours of the night. They really took a long time (840 minutes each) so please excuse my lack of a key or anything that could be useful. Please note some of the images include heavy JPEG artifacting so be careful when reading. Marcus' deployment edge is north for the purposes of orientation. Gnarlhorn's forces are in a desert khaki, quite reminiscent of Dheneb Stone.
Gnarlhorn's Deployment: Due to an unfortunate mishap (Getting a drink) I wasn't present for the roll off at the start of the game. Gnarlhorn was deploying first so he began by setting up his blockade of Warbeasts on the deployment line centre with Mohsar and the Blood Weavers and solos on the far east.
Marcus' Deployment: Marcus started by deploying his Jacks on the east side of Castle Greyskull. These were joined by the Koldun Lord behind a forest. Strakhov was deployed centrally with his faithful hound. The Demolition Corps were deployed in a clearing between the two forests with the Greylords behind them to provide back up. The massive unit of Kayazy Assassin were deployed on the east behind a forest and the Drakhun on the far east.
Gnarlhorn's Advance Deployment: The unit of Bloodtrackers went on the west flank facing down Castle Greyskull with the Shifting Stones and the ever dangerous Lord of the Feast to their east. The Druids deployed centrally, opposing the massive warjacks on the other side of the table.
Marcus' Advance Deployment: Marcus deployed his lone Manhunter in the forest in front of the mighty Drakhun. Maybe the Manhunter was afraid of horses? Who can tell what this lone mentalist was thinking?
Gnarlhorn's Turn 1: Festivities were begun by the Bloodtrackers designating the Koldun Lord as their prey. That short old man, better watch his back! After that, the Bloodtrackers sprinted up the field an enormous 14" so that they were across the halfway line. The Druids moved up and used their ability to summon Vortex's to block off a huge area of the battlefield while taking cover behind a wall. The Shifting Stones shifted to the west of the Druid blockade with the Lord of the Feast running to catch up with the phallic monuments. The Warpwolf shifted for speed and ran and riled up behind the Druids with the Pureblood running up alongside. The Gorax ran up behind the Druid blockade on the other side of the wall again providing more support for the terrible twosome. The Warwolf and White Mane both ran through the forest and ended up with their asses in the bushes to make sure they both got concealment. The Blackclads both did the same alongside them with the Bloodweavers running through the woods to get to grips with the enemy. Mohsar moved up and cast Mirage on the Warpwolf and cast the ever lovely Sunhammer. Things were looking bright! And top things of he maltreated the Gorax for having a stupid haircut which triggered his pain response ability and created a Pillar of Salt to the north east of the Druid blockade.
Marcus' Turn 1: Marcus began his turn by allocating no focus out to his jacks. The Drakhun went tramping through the undergrowth in font of him. The Manhunter moved closer to support his buddy while the Demolition Corps ran through the clearing with their hammers in the air. The Greylords moved up behind the brutes dropping Blizzards around them to obscure their presence. Strakhov moved through the forest before him while casting Superiority on the Spriggan and Overrun on himself. Strakhov tried a pot shot at a Druid but the wily old cunt was too far away. Beast-09 gunned its heavy boiler and ran towards the Druid line with the Spriggan getting a point of Focus from the Koldun Lord so it could run a respectable 12" in front of the forest.
Gnarlhorn's Turn 2: At the beginning of the turn, the Feral Warpwolf miraged his way forward. Upkeeping Sunhammer and Mirage, Gnarlhorn began his turn by moving his Bloodtrackers up to the gates of Castle Greyskull so they could throw their spears at the Koldun Lord, but unfortunately the old man was out of range as their javelins flew wide. The Shifting Stones moved up behind the girls with The Lord of the Feast contemplating whether a Raven throw would provide him with the distance needed to end up behind the Spriggan and in the Koldun Lord's face. The distance seemed sketchy at best so he moved up within the Shifting Stone's edge. The Bloodweavers on the opposite flank ran into combat with the Drakhun, intent on dropping the fat bastard off his high horse next turn. The Warwolf ran through the forest catching up behind the Bloodweavers but out of combat with the Drakhun. The White Mane ran a huge distance so that he was ready to kill counter chargers from the forest line. The fun began when the Druids behind their fortification decided to drag Beast a mighty distance with Wind Strikes, where one lucky Druid actually did a point of damage to the monster and triggered it's Hyper Aggression. Beast was now in front of the Druids, a place that was slightly too east of where he wanted him to be. In return the Gorax moved up and used its animus Primal on the Feral Warpwolf. Mohsar moved up and cast Curse of Shadows on Beast with a boost (Due to it being in combat and behind a wall). The spell struck true and things were looking awful bad for the mighty warjack. Mohsar placed another Pillar of Salt and then Maltreated to get one focus back. Finally the Feral Warpwolf struck, moving between the Druids and began smashing the living shit out of Beast-09. The phenomenal warbeast was a crazy P+S 19/18 (Watch out Deathjack!) on it's claws where Beast's Armour was only 18. When it was finished there was a Beast shaped wreck marker beside it. The Pureblood moved up and triggered its Ghostly ability to scoot past the wall and got ready to pounce on the Spriggan. One of the Blackclads teleported over to the Shifting Stones.
Marcus' Turn 2: Upkeeping Superiority on the Spriggan and Overrun on himself, Strakhov was ready to kick off. Strakhov gave three focus to the Superior Spriggan ready to unleash havoc later on. The Greylords moved up to the Drakhun and began hosing down the Bloodweavers with their sprays. A spray even hit the Warwolf killing it instantly. The Manhunter moved over and killed two more, freeing the Drakhun up. The Drakhun ran and faced the White Mane, ready to take his charge. The Demolition Corps charged the Pillar of Salt and smashed it, clearing more space for charges later that turn. Strakhov activated and used his feat Iron Fist, and then proceeded to leap out of the woods like Usain Bolt. Before the Blackclad count say "Cunt", Strakov had smashed his genitals (With a boost from his one spare focus) before sprinting off and getting Mohsar within his control area. This in turn triggered Overrun moving the Superior Spriggan 6" east around the Druid blockade. The Great Bears then activated charging a mighty 13" across the field to kick the living shit out of the Feral Warpwolf, one even getting a hit on the Pureblood. When they were finished, there was bloody chunks where the Feral once stood. Mohsar seeing his opponents mistake reaved all the fury from the beast. The Wardog ran up to protect Strakov and the Kayazy Assassins ran up behind the Great Bears ready to pounce on the remaining Bloodtrackers and Druids. The Spriggan finally activated charging toward Mohsar like a freight train (Choo choo, here come the pain train!). It shoved the Gorax aside while taking negligible damage on a couple free strikes from the druids. The War Lance striking at MAT 10 slammed home doing 16 points of damage to Mohsar, causing him to transfer to the previously untouched Pureblood. Then it struck with its Assault Shield which Mohsar took to his crusty face. The Spriggan struck again triggering another transfer doing massive damage to the Gorax, leaving it on one wound. The Spriggan tried another time but it missed as the dessicated old man proved a touch too slippery. With it's final focus, it hit and caused Mohsar to turn to dust, vowing to return and destroy Castle Greyskull.
Post Game: For such a short game, the match was filled with a whole mess of shenanigans. From Greylord sprays to Druid Fishing, it was intense. The final roll of the game was watched by everyone because if the Spriggan missed one final time, the game would have very likely gone the other way. Gnarlhorn certainly underestimated the reach of Strakhov's slingshot, but on the other hand Marcus forgot the danger of killing potential fury batteries. All in all, a wonderful game played by two awesome dudes.
On Marcus: As I have said before, Marcus is an awesome player with great unit placement and very tight rules knowledge. He had to make some pretty hefty decisions this game and it ended with a win. Strakhov seemed very much like Marcus' place style, very aggressive with loads of funky tricks and room for a puzzle solving style of play. Check out his write up at his blog: http://mangustheixinfinity.blogspot.com/
On Gnarlhorn: Gnarlhorn is our resident Circle player down at the club and he's an amazing guy. His knowledge of his faction is encyclopaedic, which also means that if you ever chat to him about combos tricks with Circle you end up coming back with more than when you started. Mohsar is very much Gnarlhorn's style of caster as he provides your army with a whole tool box of spells that either fuck up your opponents day, or absolutely ruin their shit. If only Mohsar had moved a few inches to the east. ;D
Thanks for reading, things are pretty rough at the moment but I'll post up something real soon. Cheers and good bye.
